You’ve picked your wedding date, secured your dream venue, and the excitement is in full swing - congratulations!
If you’re anything like most couples, you’re already imagining the atmosphere, the décor, and (of course) the music. Whether you’re picturing a soulful ceremony singer, an acoustic duo for drinks, or a full band to dance the night away with, live music can truly bring your wedding day to life.
But before you book your wedding singer, musician, or band, there are a few important things to check with your venue first.
As a, I’ve performed at multiple beautiful venues - from rustic barns to elegant manor houses - and trust me, checking a few details early on can save a lot of last-minute stress later!

1. Sound Limiters - What Even Are They?
Not all venues have sound limiters, but it’s definitely worth asking if yours does.
A sound limiter is a device that monitors noise levels in a space. If the music gets too loud, it can automatically cut the power - yes, really!
Don’t panic though - this doesn’t mean you can’t have live music. It just means your entertainment might need to adjust their setup to suit the venue’s requirements.
If you’re dreaming of a big, loud evening party with a live band and all your guests belting out Shania Twain, it’s best to check this in advance. Letting your suppliers know about any sound restrictions early helps them plan accordingly and keeps the night running smoothly.
2. Outdoor Music - What’s Allowed and Where
If you’re planning live music outdoors - perhaps during your drinks reception or garden ceremony - make sure to double-check the venue’s policy.
Many venues don’t allow amplified music outside, or they may have restrictions on where and when it can be played. Some even have rules about certain rooms indoors.
Finding this out early saves time, avoids disappointment, and ensures your musicians can prepare the right setup for your space.
3. Performance Space - Is There Enough Room?
It might sound obvious, but checking the performance space is a key step that’s often overlooked.
If you’ve fallen in love with the idea of a 5-piece band but your venue only has a small corner for live acts, you might need to rethink your setup or consider a smaller ensemble.
A quick chat with your venue coordinator - or even a look at photos and floor plans - can make all the difference when planning your entertainment.
4. Time Restrictions - When Does the Music Have to Stop?
Every venue has its own music curfew. Some allow music until midnight, others have to stop by 10:30 or 11pm, especially if there are nearby residents or noise regulations.
Knowing this in advance helps you plan your evening timeline, coordinate with your suppliers, and avoid any last-minute surprises.
If you’re dreaming of dancing the night away, you might even want to consider a venue that allows late-night entertainment.
5. Power Supply - Don’t Overlook the Details
Ask your venue about their power supply for live performers - it’s an easy detail to forget but it’s super important!
When you visit, make a mental note of where plug sockets are located and whether your venue requires PAT-tested equipment (Portable Appliance Testing). Most professional musicians will have their certificates ready to share, but it’s great to check in advance so you can pass on accurate information to your suppliers.

In Summary - Your Venue Live Music Checklist
Here are the main things to confirm with your venue before booking your live music:
✅ Sound Limiters: Do they have one, and how strict is it?
✅ Outdoor Music: Is amplified music allowed outside or only indoors?
✅ Space: Is there enough room for your performers and their equipment?
✅ Power Supply: Are there enough sockets and PAT test requirements?
✅ Curfew: What time must all live music finish?
Asking these questions early on means your entertainment can plan everything perfectly - and you can relax knowing there won’t be any surprises on the big day.
Final Thoughts
Planning your wedding music should be fun and exciting, not stressful! The key is communication - between you, your venue, and your suppliers.
